Darjeeling Animal Shelter has recently installed a new X-ray machine — a much-needed addition to the Shelter’sclinic.Previously, X-rays for rescued animals had to be carried out at private clinics located far from the Shelter, oftenmaking the process difficult for both our team and pet owners.

In December brought festive cheer to our small furry family at DAS with delightful Christmas celebrations. The dogs, as always, basked in the joy of human connection and shared in the holiday spirit.

In October, the Darjeeling Animal Shelter (DAS) team led by Dr. Shivani, organized three Animal Birth Control (ABC) camps across various locations in Darjeeling: Risheehat, Relling,and Pul Bazar. These camps were collaborative initiatives, bringing together local Self Help Groups and village representatives from each area to ensure the well-being of the dogs.

Rabies Day was celebrated in advance with enthusiasm and extensive community outreach by the Darjeeling Animal Shelter (DAS) in collaboration with Mission Rabies, the Darjeeling Municipality, and the Animal Resources Development Department as part of the “Rabies Free Pahad” (Rabies Free Hills) initiative.

August was a busy and productive month for the Darjeeling Animal Shelter. The team handled numerous clinic cases, executed vital rescue operations, and continued efforts to manage the stray population, all while facilitating adoptions and providing critical care for both street and pet animals.

The Animal Birth Control Programme under the Dogs Trust Project has progressed successfully. In July, a total of 94 dogs were sterilised by Dr. Shivani, with assistance from the dedicated team at DAS. Additionally, 15 cats underwent the sterilisation programme.

The monthly report from Darjeeling Animal Shelter (DAS) highlights the successful vaccination camp conducted in Mirik, supported by Dogs Trust Worldwide and with technical assistance from Mission Rabies India. Dr. Mihir, now the North East India Project lead of Mission Rabies, and Dr. Shivani from Darjeeling Animal Shelter supervised the program and actively participated in vaccinating dogs in Mirik.

The shelter experienced a significant surge in parvovirus cases among dogs, with a total of 369 cases reported. Despite this increase, timely interventions and treatments and supportive care including IV fluids, anti-nausea medications, and antibioticcs have resulted in a fair recovery rate. A dedicated treatment area for dogs affected by parvovirus has been established to manage these cases more effectively

This month, our team successfully conducted ABC procedures on 26 animals under the Dogs Trust project. Additionally, 56 dogs were inoculated against rabies. ABC and ARV are crucial components of our efforts to control the
population of stray animals and reduce instances of overpopulation in our area.

The monthly report covering February and March outlines significant challenges encountered by both shelters due to a haemoprotozoa disease outbreak affecting cats and dogs, alongside suspected Parvo cases in dogs. Despite these adversities, the veterinary team demonstrated unwavering vigilance, implementing comprehensive treatment plans to curtail the spread of the disease and facilitating the swift recovery of these afflicted animals.

In January 2024, Darjeeling Animal Shelter faced the challenges of bitterly cold weather, yet continued its unwavering commitment to the welfare of its furry residents. November witnessed the celebration of the auspicious Hindu festival’ Deepawali’ also known as the festival of lights. On this joyous occasion, dogs too had their special day known as Kukur Tihar – a traditional Nepali festival dedicated to honouring and worshipping dogs for their intrinsic qualities- love, companionship, loyalty, and commitment.

The month of October commenced with the customary Shelter activities and the rescue of a dog suspected of having rabies. Ms. Pratibha received numerous calls on the Shelter’s Helpline regarding concerns related to dog menace, dog bite cases, and rescue operations.

The month of September was dedicated to the Anti-Rabies Vaccination drive in all wards of Darjeeling. The vaccination drive was supported by Darjeeling Municipality and Dogs Trust Worldwide. With over twenty-eight rescues, two adoptions, nineteen ABCs, and two hundred and thirty-six clinical treatments, the DAS team is all set to carry on with more of their activities In September.

The sister Shelter – Darjeeling Animal Shelter has conducted fourty five ABCs on dogs in the month of June and with over twenty-four rescues of street and community dogs including puppies. Four puppies that were rescued have already been adopted and the other seven are waiting to find a loving home.

The 24 kennels DAS has are always full. The number of rescue calls that are attended by the DAS team and Vet is more than that of the sister Shelter – Kalimpong Animal Shelter. The team is always at the beck and call to help animals.

The Dogs Trust Worldwide project on ‘mass vaccination against rabies ‘in 23 wards has been successful. The DAS team has worked hard going door to door early morning in every ward of Darjeeling and vaccinating dogs.

The Darjeeling Animal Shelter has been vaccinating dogs ward–wise. The vaccination camp is for the street and community dogs in Darjeeling and this is the follow–up Programme that is conducted every year by the DAS team.

Two puppies have been adopted by the same family from Darjeeling. The puppies were dewormed and vaccinated against viral disease while they were living in the Shelter.

The Animal Shelter has successfully completed the Dog’s Trust (DTW) Project on Animal Birth Control. Dr. Mihir has done tremendous work in carrying out the ABC project for a year funded by DTW and has been successful in reaching the target of sterilising 500 dogs in one year.

An Animal Birth Control camp was conducted on the 11th of April, 22 at Mungpoo, Darjeeling. An immediate camp was conducted there after a few complaints where the young boys were found abusing dogs.

Dr. Sameer Chhetri has compiled a list of the camps carried out this year. Many remote villages and tea gardens have been visited. They include Shanti Parvat, Singhamari, Tungsung, Rangbam Busty, Sukhiapokhari, Mungerjun Tea
Estate, Dalli, Sungam Bazaar, and many others.

1831 animals were brought to the shelter by their owners, desperate for help for their pets. When the boys were out in the ambulance, during the year another 649 animals were handed to them, or were rescued.
